A great guide can customize your day according to your preferences and personalities, walk you past long lines at major attractions by pre-purchasing tickets, obtain behind-the-scenes access, and steer you to the most reputable retailers and restaurants. Along with that personal touch you’ll come away with a better understanding of a city or country’s history and culture. After all, guides are locals themselves!

Be mindful of extra costs while on a cruise. Once onboard it is very easy to lose sight of the little extras building up, such as drinks and tips.

If you’re planning to see a show in London or New York, before you pay top dollar, visit the TKTS ticket booth in Leicester Square (London) or Times Square (New York) – you can buy tickets for all the best shows for half price or at a heavy discount.

When dealing with a hotel, agent or villa owner directly, always ask for a discount. If you don’t ask, they won’t offer.

If you are interested in flying with a particular airline or staying at a particular hotel, sign up to their newsletter and watch out for special offers or sales.

Educate yourself about food and drinking safety when traveling to developing countries, in order to minimize the risk for traveler’s diarrhea. Know what to do in case that you would develop diarrhea despite taking precautionary measures.

Prepare your finances. Make sure that all your credit cards are valid and have a high enough credit limit. Know the phone number of your credit card company in case you would encounter unexpected problems. Many places still don’t accept credit cards or checks, so be sure to order and bring travelers’ checks or cash (foreign currency) in this scenario.

Think Eastern Europe rather than Western Europe. If Europe is your destination, the east is definitely cheaper than the west. Think about Budapest, Hungary; Prague, Czech Republic; or Krakow, Poland. Consider countries like Slovenia, Croatia, or Romania.

Plan for a variety of accommodation styles. On a trip of more than a week I always plan for some budget accommodation, some mid-range, and some luxury. Truly, there are advantages to budget accommodation and by saving on a few nights in a cheaper hotel I can come in on budget even when I include a few nights at a more expensive one.

Suggested destinations : St. Barth has an entirely different vibe than most other Caribbean islands. Instead of the typical laid-back privacy most islands boast about, it’s super chic and sceney and the crowd is overwhelmingly European. Pretty much everyone is too cool for school, but without trying. The women there seem to have nailed beachy waves and sunkissed skin but as if it all happened by accident. But that’s exactly what I wanted out of my trip. I wanted to sip champagne by the ocean, go to white dance parties and stay up past my bed time. There are so many fabulous clubs and of course fabulous shops-not that most of us can even afford a fraction of what they sell. But that’s St. Barth. And if you can make it happen, its beaches are some of my favorite in the world. I stayed at Tom Beach Hotel, which is just down the beach from Eden Roc and Nikki Beach. I savored every minute of my stay-literally woke up at 6am the morning we left just to wade in the bathtub water that was our beach. It was fantastic.
